A.X.E.L Filing · What you'll need
You don't file transactions. You file about a dozen numbers.
Hundreds of bank lines become a handful of totals. However you get them, from your bookkeeping, a spreadsheet or a chat with your favourite AI, the wizard only asks for those totals.
The numbers the wizard asks for
For the year your company's accounts cover. Most trades businesses leave several of these at zero.
Over the year
- TurnoverEverything you invoiced in the year, paid or not
- Cost of salesMaterials, stock, subcontractors
- Running costsVan, fuel, phone, insurance, software, accountant
- Staff costsWages and employer NI, including a director's salary
- Equipment boughtTools, vans, laptops bought outright
- DepreciationOnly if you already depreciate your equipment
- Bank interestAny interest the account paid you
On the last day of the year
- Cash at the bankYour balance on the last day of the year
- Owed to youInvoices still unpaid at year end
- Owed by youBills you hadn't paid yet, tax due, loans
- StockMaterials left over, if any
- Equipment valueWhat your tools and vans are worth on the books
Three ways to get them
You already have the numbers
From your bookkeeping software, a spreadsheet you keep, or last year's accounts as a guide. Type them straight into the wizard. No AI needed.
Xero, QuickBooks and FreeAgent all export a profit and loss report and a balance sheet.
You have records, not totals
Upload your bank statements, invoice spreadsheet or receipts to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot and ask it to total them into the figures above. Then type them in.
CSV, PDF statements, Excel exports and photos of receipts all work.
Your AI fills in the draft
Connect your AI to A.X.E.L from your account page. It reads your files, shows you which line went where, asks about anything unclear and saves the figures to your draft once you agree.
You still review, pay and submit in A.X.E.L yourself.
Talk it through
A year of statements, sorted in one conversation.
Drop in what you have and talk to it like you would a bookkeeper. A good AI sorts every line into the right figure, spots the things people usually get wrong, and asks rather than guesses.
- Equipment goes under equipment bought, not running costs
- Dividends and loan repayments stay out of your costs
- It asks what was still owed at year end, because statements can't show that
- Nothing is saved until you've seen the mapping and said yes
When connected, A.X.E.L gives your AI its own filing guide, so it follows the same rules as the wizard rather than improvising.

Questions
Do I need a paid AI subscription?
No. Any AI chat, free plans included, can total your statements so you can type the figures in. Connecting an AI to A.X.E.L so it saves the figures for you works on Claude's free plan (one custom connector) and on ChatGPT Plus and above with developer mode switched on. Both providers call this feature a beta.
Is the AI filing my return?
No. It sorts and totals your records and, if you connect it, saves the figures to a draft. You check every figure, sign the declaration as a director, pay, and submit to Companies House and HMRC from A.X.E.L yourself.
Can I just use my bank statements?
They are the best starting point, but they only show money in and out. Your accounts also count invoices you were still owed and bills you still owed at the year end, so you will be asked for those. If bank statements are genuinely all you have, what comes out is an estimate, and an accountant is the safer route.
Where do my statements go?
To whichever AI you choose, under that provider's own terms. A.X.E.L only receives the figures you approve, not your statements. If you would rather not share them with an AI, total them yourself and type them in.
What if my company is not a simple one?
A.X.E.L Filing is for micro companies with simple affairs: turnover under £1m, 10 staff or fewer, one UK trade, no groups, property income or R&D claims. The wizard checks this first and tells you if you need an accountant instead.
